Natural Aid

History

In order to find the source of AIDS, it is necessary to look for the origin of HIV, and find out how, when and where HIV first began to cause disease in human by making immune system weaker. HIV is a lentivirus and like all viruses of this type, it attacks immune system. Lentiviruses are in turn part of a larger group of viruses known as retroviruses. The name 'lentivirus' means 'slow virus' because they take a long time to produce any adverse effects in the body. They have been found in a number of different animals, including cats, sheep, horses and cattle. However, the most interesting lentivirus observed while investigating HIV is, the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV) that affects monkeys.

HIV is a descendant of Simian Immunodeficiency Virus, because certain strains of SIV bear a very close resemblance to HIV-1 and HIV-2, the two types of HIV. Researchers claimed that chimpanzees were the source of HIV-1 and that the virus has at some point crossed species. SIVcpz was transfered to humans as chimps being killed and eaten up or their blood got cuts and wounds by the hunter. The hunter's body would have fought off SIV, but it adapted itself within human immune system as new host and thus human became HIV-1.

During late 19th and early 20th century, Africa was ruled by colonial forces. In areas such as French Equatorial Africa and the Belgian Congo, colonial rule was particularly harsh and many Africans were forced into labor camps where sanitation was poor, food was scarce and physical demands were extreme. These factors would have been sufficient to put anyone in poor health, so SIV easily have infiltrated the labor force and taken advantage of their weakened immune systems to become HIV prone. A stray and perhaps sick chimpanzee with SIV would have made extra source of food for the workers.

What is HIV?

HIV stands for "Human Immuno Deficiency virus". HIV is a retrovirus that infects cells in human immune system and destroys or impairs their functions.

What is AIDS?

AIDS stands for "Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome" and describes the collection of symptoms and infections associated with deficiency through weakness of immune system.

HIV / AIDS in Ayurveda

HIV/AIDS in Ayurveda may be considered as ojakshaya means loss of Vital Energy. The symptoms, signs, causative factors (Nidan) & treatment aspects has been described in many ayurvedic treaties like Charaka, Bhavpakash, Vaidya Chintamani &charakadatta etc. Ojas is essence of our body, we do any activity under the influence of our inner or outer strength (Bala), Ojas is responsible for Bala. Both are so much intimately related that they are used as a Synonyms. Ojas is said to resemble Kapha when it contributes to our strength or Bala.

Bala described in Ayurvedic classics are of two types :-

1: Karya Shakti: The capacity to do physical & mental work.
2: Vyadhi Shamatva: Capacity to resist the disease.
Out of these two the latter here is more relevant & of two types (Mode of action of Ojas )

Acharya Charaka has described its Vyadhi Shamatva ( Resistence to disease manifestation) in two ways

A: Vyadhyutpadapratibandhakatva: Capacity to prevent the onset of disease.

B: Vyadhibalanirodhakatva: Capacity to restrain or withstand the strength (severity) or virulence of disease.

Both of them together called Immunity against Disease and Resistance against death & decay. AIDS too fall in this category. Ojas & Vyadhi Shamatva vary from person to person, depending on Dehaprakruti (Body constitution), Ahar Vihar (Food & Activities) etc. Ojas Kshaya (Decrease of Ojas) weakens the person, thus opportunistic infections find their way in the body of that person.
A nutritious diet, Ayurvedic baseline therapy, timely allopathic treatment of opportunistic infections & regular counseling support appears to be an ideal combination the management of HIV /AIDS patients. In order to find the source of AIDS, it is necessary to look for the origin of HIV, and find out how, when and where HIV first began to cause disease in human by making immune system weaker.
